After an encounter with the X parasite leaves Samus transformed, she boards a research station where the organism has escaped containment. Her mission begins under computer guidance, with objectives that steer exploration through separate environmental sectors.
Absorbing defeated parasites restores resources, but the station's greatest danger is something Samus cannot initially confront head on. New abilities gradually change the routes through known spaces, and scripted events make returning to a corridor unexpectedly tense. Fusion narrows the wandering compared with some Metroid adventures, using that structure to create urgency. The station feels less like an empty maze than a facility actively coming apart.
