Sonic and Knuckles take separate paths through the later reaches of Angel Island, each responding to Robotnik's continuing interference. Sonic keeps the familiar pace and shield abilities, while Knuckles can glide and climb walls, making exploration feel fundamentally different. The stages build from Mushroom Hill's springy landscape toward increasingly elaborate machinery and aerial spectacle.
Giant rings offer another chance to pursue Chaos Emeralds through blue-sphere challenges. Different character routes give a return visit practical purpose instead of merely changing the sprite you watch. Originally designed with a cartridge connection that could expand other Sonic games, this standalone adventure still has a complete identity built around contrast: rush forward, or search the walls above.
