Valeria's divided peoples supply the setting for a resistance story in which the convenient order and the defensible choice do not always agree. The original Super Famicom Tactics Ogre gives individual combatants their own turns on elevated grid maps. Classes determine much of what each soldier can contribute, but terrain and positioning can make even a promising matchup difficult.
Recruiting and developing the force creates continuity between battles, while branching decisions change the course of the wider campaign. Its density comes from the relationship between those scales: a war is decided through particular people, and their survival depends on very concrete choices about movement, equipment, and timing.
