Beneath Zebes, progress is something you uncover rather than something the game arranges in a straight line. Samus searches for the Space Pirates and their stolen Metroids through connected caverns filled with repeating corridors, strange creatures, and abrupt changes in color and music.
The Morph Ball lets her slip into tight passages; bombs, missiles, and movement upgrades expand the routes she can take. There is no built-in map, so orientation becomes part of the challenge. Returning to a remembered barrier with the right tool can feel as important as defeating a boss. The sparse presentation leaves plenty of room for the planet to feel immense and unfriendly.
